Having an IUD fitted usually takes me about 5 to 10 minutes, but I ask you to allow at least 30 minutes for the appointment. Before fitting your IUD, I may suggest a test for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and/or a pregnancy test, as an IUD cannot be fitted if you might be pregnant. Some people experience discomfort during the fitting. I will advise you to take pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen about an hour beforehand. I always also provide additional pain relief, such as local anaesthetic. If you’re concerned about pain at any point, please let me know - I will always listen and can stop at any time.

During the procedure, I will gently insert a smooth, tube-shaped instrument (a speculum) into your vagina to allow me to see your cervix-similar to a cervical screening (smear test). I will use a local anaesthetic spray to numb the cervix. In some circumstances, I may use an anaesthetic gel inserted into the uterus for pain management. I will then carefully insert the IUD into your womb through your cervix. If you feel any pain or discomfort at any point, please tell me - I will always listen and can stop at any time. There will be a member of staff in the room with you during the fitting, you’re very welcome to have a friend or family member. After your IUD is fitted, you may experience some period-like pain for a few days. Pain relief such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can help, and you may also notice some light bleeding (spotting). Your IUD has two thin, soft threads that sit at the top of your vagina. I will show you how to feel for these so you can check it’s still in place. I recommend checking a few times in the first month, and then regularly, for example after each period. If you’re unable to feel the threads, it may mean the IUD has moved. Please seek advice from me, your GP, or a sexual health clinic as soon as possible. You may not be protected against pregnancy, so use additional contraception until it has been checked. I can remove your IUD at any time. Depending on the type, it can last between 3 and 10 years, and we can discuss when it should be replaced. It’s possible to become pregnant straight after removal, so if you don’t wish to conceive, use another form of contraception (such as condoms) starting 7 days before removal.
